In a bid to tackle Monrovia’s longstanding struggle with cleanliness, the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has initiated a promising new approach: the placement of trash bins in strategic areas across the city.
Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, has long grappled with sanitation issues, earning a reputation as one of the world’s dirtiest cities. Previous administrations, including the notorious tactics of Mary Broh and the political strategies of Mayor Koigee, failed to make a significant dent in the city’s filth. However, Mayor Siafa’s recent move to introduce trash bins could mark a turning point in the city’s battle against waste.
Under the careful guidance of Mayor John-Charuk Siafa, the MCC has commenced the installation of trash bins at key locations throughout Monrovia. These bins are strategically positioned to discourage street dumping and to facilitate easy waste disposal for residents and visitors alike.
Mayor Siafa emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The placement of trash cans at strategic sites throughout the city will serve as a platform for appropriate waste management and encourages citizen awareness.” This proactive approach aims to instill a culture of responsible waste disposal among Monrovians.
Since their installation, citizens have been observed utilizing the newly erected trash bins, demonstrating a positive response to the initiative. Street seller Mamie Kamara commented, “These trash bins are a welcome sight. It makes it easier for us to keep our surroundings clean, and it’s good for business too.”
Supporting Mayor Siafa’s vision, spokesperson for the Monrovia City Corporation, Mr. Pekeleh Gbuapaye, reiterated the significance of the trash bin placement. “This initiative is a crucial step towards improving sanitation in Monrovia,” he remarked. “By providing accessible waste disposal options, we aim to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.”
