Gbarpolu County, Liberia – May 15, 2024 – Senator Amara Konneh is set to begin a comprehensive thank you tour across Gbarpolu County following his victory in the 2023 General Elections. Konneh, who secured 31.1% of the votes against his closest competitor Alfred Koiwood’s 24.9%, will visit various districts to express his gratitude to the voters who entrusted him with their mandate.
The tour, which will span several weeks, is scheduled to kick off with major events in Bopolu, Gbarma, and Belleh Districts. These events are expected to draw large crowds as constituents gather to hear from their newly elected senator.
“Winning the senatorial seat is a profound honor, and I am committed to serving the people of Gbarpolu County with dedication and integrity,” Senator Konneh said in a statement. “This tour is not just about saying thank you; it’s about listening to the concerns of my constituents and discussing how we can work together to improve our communities.”
Amara Konneh’s political journey is marked by a distinguished career in public service. Prior to his election as senator, he served as the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, where he played a pivotal role during the Ebola crisis. His efforts in maintaining macroeconomic stability amidst the crisis earned him the prestigious African Finance Minister of the Year award from the London-based Banker Magazine in 2014. Konneh’s leadership was instrumental in stabilizing the exchange rate and controlling inflation despite a significant economic downturn. He also coordinated the Ebola response, mobilizing resources from government, bilateral and multilateral partners, NGOs, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector.
“Managing the Ebola crisis was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced, but it was also a testament to what we can achieve when we come together,” Konneh remarked. “I intend to bring that same spirit of collaboration and resilience to my work in the Senate.”
Born in Balla Bassa, Gbamah District, Gbarpolu County, Konneh’s roots run deep in the region he now represents. He spent his early years in Balla Bassa Town before moving to Monrovia in 1985 to continue his education. His journey from a refugee in Guinea, where he established a free school for Liberian refugees, to a distinguished career in public service, is a testament to his resilience and dedication.
Konneh’s educational pursuits led him to the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in information systems with distinction from Drexel University and a graduate degree in management from Pennsylvania State University. He worked at Vanguard Group of Investment Companies, where he was recruited into the prestigious Smart Leadership Program. After over a decade in the United States, he returned to Liberia in 2006 to contribute to the nation’s development.
Despite his impressive credentials, Konneh has not shied away from controversy. In 2014, the Liberian Senate voted to jail him for proposing a $1.2 million budget cut, demonstrating his willingness to challenge established powers when necessary.
The thank you tour will provide an opportunity for Konneh to reconnect with his roots and reinforce his commitment to the people of Gbarpolu County. It also offers a platform for constituents to engage directly with their senator, ensuring their voices are heard in the legislative process.
“Together, we will work towards a brighter future for Gbarpolu County,” Konneh affirmed. “I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during this tour and hearing your thoughts and ideas on how we can move forward together.”
