Monrovia (The Saharaa) – Nimba County Senator Prince Y. Johnson is expressing frustration over President Joseph Boakai’s decision to support the establishment of a war crimes court in Liberia. “Boakai has refused to respond to my calls since meeting with war-crime court advocate Allen White,” Senator Johnson stated. Allegations have surfaced that Boakai received $300 million to endorse the court’s establishment.
Montserrado District #11 Representative Richard Nagbe Koon has introduced a bill aimed at revoking the President’s authority to grant amnesty to war and economic crimes offenders in Liberia. The bill, titled “Repealing an Act to Grant Immunity from Civil and Criminal Proceedings for Acts and Crimes Committed during the Civil War from December 1989 to August 2003,” was presented during the House of Representatives’ 8th sitting on Thursday, February 3, 2024. Representative Koon argues that the current law granting amnesty to those who committed heinous crimes perpetuates impunity, undermining peace, security, and social justice.
Senator Johnson contends that the law granting amnesty has been repealed, making it inappropriate for President Boakai to accept bribes and support the court’s establishment. Johnson asserts that he and other former generals and combatants of the Liberian civil war are currently strategizing on establishing the court in Liberia.
Reports from Sahara News Nimba County Correspondent indicate that some citizens in the county are disappointed in President Boakai’s government, viewing his actions as a witch-hunt against their “hero,” Senator Prince Johnson. These citizens consider their vote for Boakai and the Unity Party to be an irreversible mistake.
