Liberia’s darling boy, Joseph Fahnbulleh has demonstrated his exceptional prowess by securing both gold medals in the men’s 100m and 200m at the 23rd African Athletics Championship held in Douala, Cameroon. His outstanding performance highlights his readiness for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Team Liberia celebrated another triumphant moment, concluding the championship with an impressive haul of five medals: three golds, one silver, and one bronze, largely thanks to Fahnbulleh’s historic double gold victory,” noted an observer.
On Wednesday, June 26, Fahnbulleh, a 2020 Olympics finalist, completed his sweep by clinching the men’s 200-meter title with a time of 20.25 seconds. He outpaced Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who finished in 20.66 seconds, and Zimbabwe’s Tapiwanashe Makarawu, who clocked 20.51 seconds.
Fahnbulleh’s achievement makes him the first Liberian athlete to win two gold medals at the African Championship. Reflecting on this accomplishment, it was stated, “On the all-time medal table of the championship, Liberia has now accumulated a total of ten medals, comprising three golds, two silvers, and five bronzes.”
This year, Liberia’s sole bronze medal came from the women’s 4x100m relay. The team, consisting of Ebony Morrison, Destiny Smith-Barnett, Maia McCoy, and Thelma Davis, secured the bronze with a time of 44.38 seconds.
