Ganta, Liberia — In a significant stride towards improving sanitation and combating pollution in underserved communities, Gusceman, Inc. has announced its partnership with PSI and other organizations for a five-year USAID-funded Countywide Sanitation Activity. This social enterprise venture aims to promote hygienic practices and end open defecation, focusing on sustainable business models that will ensure the continuation of sanitation services beyond the project’s duration.
The project, which spans five counties—Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Bong, Nimba, and Lofa—brings together a consortium including Athena Infonomics and Concern Worldwide, with PSI serving as the prime contractor. The initiative underscores a toilet-based approach to hygiene, emphasizing the development of local businesses to sustain sanitation efforts.
From May 20th to 25th, the Gusceman team conducted capacity-building, business development, and peer-learning training sessions in Ganta for businesses from Bong, Lofa, and Nimba, and in Buchanan for those from Montserrado and Grand Bassa. These sessions saw active participation from over 161 businesses, encompassing wholesalers, retailers, and roaming artisans.
The training sessions were supported by consortium members and focused on fostering a market-based approach to sanitation. Mr. Augustus J. Flomo, CEO of Gusceman, Inc., attended the sessions, motivating participants to align their business goals with the project’s objectives. He emphasized the importance of leveraging Gusceman’s on-ground staff in the five counties to maximize the initiative’s impact.
Mr. Flomo praised the dedication of the business development team for their effective delivery of training modules, which he described as transformative for any business aspiring to grow. He urged the businesses to continue collaborating with Gusceman in solving private sector challenges, thereby contributing to a robust domestic economy.
“Let’s keep moving together in solving problems in the private sector to pave the way for a strong domestic economy. Our businesses, our future, Bravo!” Mr. Flomo declared, encapsulating the spirit of the initiative.
