The Liberian People’s Party (LPP), under the leadership of Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, has voiced skepticism regarding the purported achievements of the Unity Party (UP) administration under President Boakai and Vice President Koung. The LPP, which endorsed the UP in the 2023 presidential run-off election, is demanding transparency, clarity, and tangible results from the government, emphasizing the need for real, measurable progress rather than mere promises.
In a press release issued on Monday, June 10, 2024, the LPP acknowledged some progress made by the UP administration within its first 100 days in office. However, the party expressed reservations about the depth and sustainability of these achievements, highlighting concerns that undermine public trust and hinder Liberia’s progress.
Cllr. Gongloe, the head of the LPP, stated, “As a party that supported the UP during the second round, we have a moral obligation to speak truthfully about the administration’s performance.” He commended certain initiatives, such as the establishment of the war and economic crimes court through Executive Order #131, as a significant step toward ending impunity and promoting accountability.
The LPP also applauded efforts to rehabilitate rural roads in regions like Lofa and the southeast, as well as initiatives by various government agencies. However, the party raised several issues of concern, including the lack of an inclusive government, financial mismanagement, violation of constitutional boundaries, and corruption.
Gongloe emphasized, “Despite promises of inclusivity, eight counties lack cabinet representation, which contravenes the Executive Law. Financial mismanagement, misuse of funds, and non-disclosure of financial transactions, including loans and purchases, undermine transparency and accountability.”
Furthermore, the LPP highlighted the need for systemic educational reforms, increased budget allocations, and stronger international relations. The party called on the UP administration to adhere to the Maputo Declaration, allocate sufficient funds for agriculture, and implement systemic changes to enhance education quality.
In conclusion, the LPP reiterated its commitment to holding the government accountable and demanding clarity, transparency, and tangible results in all promised areas. “The Liberian people deserve more than just promises; they deserve real, measurable progress,” emphasized Cllr. Gongloe. “We will continue to challenge the administration to ensure that the interests of all Liberians are served.”
