In a significant development within the United Methodist Church in Liberia, Reverend Dr. Samuel Wilson, Board Chair of the Ordained United Methodist Church Liberia Annual Conference, has publicly criticized Bishop Samuel Quire over alleged wrongful dismissal of key board members. These members had been advocating for clarity on the church’s stance regarding same-sex marriage.
Wilson emphasized the longstanding internal debate within the church, stating, “For over 50 years, the church has grappled with discussions around appointing homosexual pastors, district superintendents, bishops, and the acceptance of same-sex marriages in the United Methodist Church.” He accused Bishop Quire of misleading the Liberian congregation about decisions made at the General Conference and the Annual Conference.
Addressing reporters at a news conference in Monrovia, Wilson highlighted concerns about transparency and adherence to church protocols, asserting that Bishop Quire’s actions have fostered confusion within the church community.
In response, Bishop Samuel Quire held a separate news conference on June 7th, where he clarified the church’s position, stating, “The Church is not a Gay Church and encouraged members to continue seeking God in the right direction.”
Additionally, it is noteworthy to mention that Liberian society traditionally exhibits resistance to same-sex marriage. Reflecting this sentiment, a local community leader remarked, “Same-sex marriage is not aligned with our cultural values and beliefs.”
This ongoing internal conflict within the United Methodist Church underscores broader societal and cultural considerations impacting discussions on LGBTQ+ rights in Liberia.
